What is canine hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy uses water to relieve pain or discomfort and promote wellbeing. Hydrotherapy treatment can provide a number of benefits such as:
- Encouraging full range of motion of the joints - as the water provides buoyancy, reducing or eliminating the need for the animal to weight-bear.
- Relieving swelling - due to the hydrostatic pressure provided by the water.
- Improved circulation - as a result of the movement of the limbs and the warm water.
- Improved muscle strength and tone - as the viscosity of the water provides some resistance to movement.
- Decreased pain - due to the hydrostatic pressure provided by the water.
- Increased sensory perception - due to the viscosity of the water.
- Slowing of the progression of some degenerative conditions - such as osteoarthritis
- Providing mental stimulation - particularly useful for dogs whose land-based exercise is limited and older dogs.
Which conditions can benefit from hydrotherapy?
- CDRM (chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy)
- Cruciate injuries
- Elbow dysplasia

- Legg-Calve Perthes disease
- Neurological disorders
